FPL: Who to captain ahead of GW1

The Premier League returns tonight accompanied by the start of the Fantasy Premier League, but with a 19:30 deadline, is your team up to scratch?

Captain’s dilemma

With Liverpool traveling to Fullham and Tottenham hosting Southampton, the obvious contenders for the armband are Mo Salah and Harry Kane. Salah’s GW1 record makes the Egyptian a shoe-in for the C, having returned in each of his past five GW1-outings, but Kane’s record against The Saints throws the cat among the pigeons.

Kane averages 7.3 points when coming up against Southampton and all of his 11 goals in 17 matches against The Saints (in all competitions) have come in the Premier League. Compared to Salah’s 13.6 return in GW1 fixtures, Kane seems better off as a vice-captaincy option (should you have the luxury of owning both), but the Spurs striker is coming off an impressive pre-season run of form. Have a look below:

So, who to pick?

Verdict: Mo Salah. A pre-season Harry Kane showing signs of returning to his mercurial best is a tempting option and one that is near guaranteed to bring some form of return, but Salah’s 13.6 return makes him the safe bet for the armband.
